- Bentitatxell Primary School Handwriting Competition
In these times of keyboard skills and direct messaging the art of good handwriting is
viewed by some as less important. But not by the teachers at Santa Maria Magdalene
Primary school, Benitatchell and Teulada Moraira Lions club.
For many years the school has entered all their pupils into the annual Claude Kelly
Memorial Handwriting Competition named in honour of a founder member of the
Lion’s s club.
Traditionally, on the last day of term, all the children assemble eager to find out who has
won the coveted diplomas. At this special ceremony the Lions President and the
headteacher award the prizes for the best handwriting to the rousing applause and cheers
of the whole school.
A new year, a new term , the children start practising their handwriting skills once again
in the hope they will impress the Lion’s judges the most.
The tradition continues
Cap D’or Primary School Moraira
The CEIP Cap d,Or school in Moraira is an early childhood and primary education centre that
ranges from 2 years old preschool to 11 years old Primary 6 th Grade. (Interestingly its name comes
from the Cap D,Or watchtower , built at the end of the 16 th century on the Valencian coast.)
The school currently has 80 infants ( 2-5 years) and 200 primary (5-11 years) school children from
the Moraira catchment area. And between 25-30 dedicated and highly motivated teachers. The
Teulada Moraira Lions group had a very comprehensive and thorough meeting with the senior staff
of the school. It could be seen from our visit to the school the close bond that exists between pupils
and teachers, in this happy and lively environment, which contributes positively to the hard work
and objectives set in the schools “move your body, activate your mind” initiative.
The T/M Lions have a past history of working with the school and assisting with worthwhile
projects, and once again the Lions have joined up with the school to help implement their latest
strategy of “ Move your body, activate your mind”.
The aim of this initiative , which the teachers and children have collaborated together on, is to help
academic level, attention and student motivation, in particular in relation to enhancing the
playground school time experience for all the children, encouraging movement and action, so that
all children are offered a wider variety of activities regardless of their tastes, interests and abilities.
Their objective is to improve and optimise the external spaces of the school and encourage the
social inclusion of all students, mixed play cooperation, physical and intellectual activity. What a
great idea this school has come up with !
One of the key activities the children identified was the need/ want of a climbing wall. So
the T/M Lions will contribute €1754, together with Local authority funding to creat a climbing
wall , which will be constructed hopefully before the end of 2025 summer break.
The teaching staff do not think of this initiative as a passing fad or just a 2 year project with a
beginning an end, but see this as a long term initiative which will be reviewed , evaluated and
further developed over forth coming years. The lions have already committed money for the
climbing wall, and in phase 2 of this initiative have today agreed to help with requests for table
tennis tables(€2279) and 4 seater games tables (€2268) to enhance the play ground facilities.
Drawing competition
In addition to helping with “Move your body, activate your mind” , the Teulada Moraira Lions have
also started , what they hope will be an annual event with the school, a Drawing completion . The
7th March is International Women’s Day, and the Lions have invited all students at CEIP Cap d,Or
school to participate in the 1st drawing competition to commemorate this special women s day, with
a drawing theme”women who inspire”
The children have been asked to draw / depict a woman who has been or is important in-the
students lives. They may be close figures such as mothers, grandmothers, teachers etc., or women
who inspire them through bravery, intelligence or achievements. There is a comprehensive set of
rules for this drawing competition, all of which must be competed in class and submitted to the
teachers by 28th Feb.
Teachers and Lions club members will evaluate the drawings based on originality , creativity and
Caritas
Have you ever wondered when you go into a supermarket and see the
charity food trolleys waiting to be filled by generous shoppers, where the
food goes and to whom?
In Moraira, the Pepe La Sal supermarket collects food for a local charity
called Caritas. Many of you will have heard of Caritas,as in most towns all
over Spain there will be a Caritas set up ,it is an aid organisation reaching
out to help the most vulnerable and excluded members of the community,
regardless of race or religion.
It all started with just one man, a Roman Catholic priest, from humble
beginnings in Germany 1897 Lorenz Werthmann who founded the first
Caritas. The organisation, named after a Latin word meaning love and
compassion, grew to become one of the largest aid and development
agencies in the world. Caritas Spain is not a church run charity . It is funded
by contributions from member organisations and through private donations,
which is why you will often see appeals for volunteers and funds . Its
finances are reviewed annually by external auditors and full annual reports
are available . Locally the Caritas in Teulada Moraira is supported by some
local government funding, plus the Teulada Moraira Lions have a
permanent funding allocation which supplies additional essential foods and
supplies to Caritas as and when needed. Caritas distribute in a targeted way
to 42 local families and individuals, who are listed on the Padron, and who
have fallen on hard times.
Once a week the ladies of The Lions group collect the food directly from
the supermarket trolleys in Pepe La Sal , and given to Caritas. The Teulada
Moraira Lions is at present the only charity which regularly helps. Caritas
mainly supply food items but when families are really struggling , and
funds allow, occasionally are able to provide items like nappies, glasses for
children or hearing aids . Gudrun , the president has run the Teulada
Moraira Caritas voluntarily since 2009 with only 5 volunteer helpers.Caritas
supports the worst off and most disadvantaged in our community. So next
time you see that supermarket trolley empty at the end of the checkouts,
give generously – remember we can’t help everyone, but everyone can help
someone
