The Teulada–Moraira Lions are celebrating a momentous milestone this year, being the 25th anniversary of having their charter bestowed by Lions Club International. The club was founded in September 1994 by a small but enthusiastic band of Expat Lions from the UK and was headed up by the late George Smith, MBE. The club very quickly became established serving the communities of Teulada, Moraira and Benitachell and, with the twice monthly bookstall selling donated second-hand books at the Friday market in Moraira, the Lions presence was soon to be very prominent.
The club has gone from strength to strength with the traditional Halloween party, free summer concerts and Christmas shows (“What a Cracker”) now being established traditions. Many and varied fund-raising activities have been and continue to be produced by the TM Lions. These include sponsored walks, quiz nights, fabulous concerts, fashion shows, race nights, dinner dances etc. The “Lions Den”, the TM Lions flagship fund-raising shop, was opened in September 2014 and is a major contributor to the charitable funds the club is able to donate to local and international good causes. These are too numerous to mention but significant donations have been made to hospitals, health centres, individuals, day care facilities, music schools, Protección Civil and disaster relief. The club is entirely self-supporting with the members funding administrative costs so that all charitable donations go directly to those who need it most.
A special note of gratitude must go to the town halls of Teulada – Moraira and Benitachell who have given invaluable assistance to the club since its inception, and we are proud to have both Mayors as honorary members.
Lion President, Dr. Nico Dekkers, takes over the reins once again for this special year in the history of the Teulada – Moraira Lions club and, with a full programme of exciting and special events, it should indeed be a year to remember. We, the Lions, would like to extend a huge thank you to our many, many supporters over the years and we look forward to seeing you all and help us to celebrate this special year in Lionism.
